Day 1 to 1 – Arrive San José

The capital city of Costa Rica, San José, is nestled in a fertile valley among coffee and sugar-cane farms. Discover the beautiful National Theatre, built in 1897, as well as the Gold, Jade and National Museums. The capital also boasts chic cafes and restaurants, great shopping and friendly locals.

Day 2 to 2 – Tortuguero

Today you will leave for the Tortuguero National Park which is one of Costa Rica’s most popular ecotourism destinations. The bustling little village has strong Afro-Caribbean roots and is best known for attracting multitudes of sea turtles that come here to lay their eggs. However, Tortuguero is so much more than just a turtle nursery. There are no cars or streets and nature is literally bursting into town. On one side of the village, rivers and waterways allow you to paddle deep into the jungle and experience the natural world in peace. When you arrive at your lodge, you will check in and relax, listening to the sounds of the wildlife or just soak up the laidback atmosphere in town.

Day 3 to 3 – Tortuguero National Park

This morning you will head out with your guide to explore the incredible variety of wildlife present in the National Park. In a small boat you will cruise along the park’s network of interconnecting canals and lagoons, in search of howler monkeys, sloths, crocodiles, turtles, anteaters and some 350 species of birds and countless butterflies. The park also provides shelter to endangered animals such as manatees, tapirs and jaguars to name a few. Some of the more colourful bird species you might see include the rufescent and tiger herons, keel-billed toucans, parrots and kingfishers. During the tour of the National Park, you will have fantastic views into the jungle canopy and you can often spot more wildlife this way than on walking forest excursions. The remainder of the day is at your leisure.

Between July and October it is also possible to head to the beach at night in search of the green sea turtles coming here to lay their eggs in the sand. During the period of seven to ten weeks after nesting, the turtle eggs hatch which is an incredible sight to witness.

Day 4 to 4 – Sarapiqui

Today you will set off for Sarapiqui, surrounded by lush green forests and banana plantations. This one time small port is now a major destination for adventure sports and nature visits to the reserves. En route you will enjoy lunch in Guápiles, followed by a chocolate tour, to uncover the natural and cultural history of the cacao tree. Your guide will reveal the secrets of transforming cacao fruit into chocolate – a process that includes harvesting, fermentation, drying and milling of the seeds. You will see the chocolate-making process first-hand and for the best part get to sample the organic rainforest chocolate. On arrival in Sarapiquí, you will check into your lodge and the remainder of the day is at your leisure.

Day 5 to 5 – Sarapiqui

Today you will enjoy a tranquil river safari, floating in an inflatable raft on the scenic Sarapiquí River which extends for 53 miles through the rainforest, all the way to the border between Costa Rica and Nicaragua. As your naturalist guide tells you about the incredible biodiversity of this area, you will see for yourself a great variety of fauna and fauna such as exotic birds, sloths, iguanas, jungle snakes, fish and more. You might even spot the Jesus Lizard, so named because it can walk on water! Following the river safari, the remainder of the day is free for you to enjoy your beautiful surroundings.

Day 6 to 6 – Arenal Volcano

Today you will be transferred to La Fortuna in Arenal by private vehicle. Once a sleepy town, the Arenal Volcano erupted violently after almost 400 years of dormancy and the town became the jumping off point for people in search of fiery night skies and creeping lava. The amazing scenery of the area, the scenic Lake Arenal, numerous nearby hot springs and adventure activities have made La Fortuna one of the most popular regions in Costa Rica.

This afternoon you will meet your guide and do some hiking in the secondary forest around the Arenal Volcano National Park. The area contains a great wealth of geologic and biological complexity and you will hike over the lava fields at the foot of the volcano, one of the most active in the Americas. To end the day, soak away any weary muscles at the nearby hot springs. Enjoy a soothing bath in the natural pools with a refreshing waterfall shower against the backdrop of beautiful, tropical gardens and under a starry sky.

Day 7 to 7 – Monteverde

This morning you will set off for the lush mountaintop paradise of Monteverde, crossing Lake Arenal and then continuing overland. Nestled between two primary cloud forest reserves, the high altitude of the town, some 1440 metres above sea level, results in a steady supply of clouds. The moisture from these clouds catches on the branches of the tallest trees and drips down to the other organisms below, supporting a complex and far-reaching ecosystem. Over 100 species of mammals, thousands of insect species and over 2500 varieties of plants all thrive here. Once you have checked in to your hotel, the remainder of the day is at your leisure.

Day 8 to 8 – Monteverde Cloud Forest

This morning you will enjoy guided visit to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. There are a number of options you can choose from the 13-kilometre network of trails. Go up to the “La Ventana” scenic overlook, to witness the contrasting panoramas of the continental divide. From here you will discover for yourself the moisture-laden trade winds blowing in that create the clouds of the cloud forest. Look to the top of the huge trees where over 500 bird species live such as the magnificent quetzal and the three-wattle bellbird. There are more than 3000 species of plants, 500 of them orchids, 120 of reptiles and amphibians, and 130 of mammals. You will see many for yourself and fully appreciate why this tiny country has such huge biodiversity. The remainder of the day is at your leisure.

This afternoon you will experience an exhilarating ride along a network of zip lines. The cables and platforms are built into the cloud forest rather than above it, allowing you to feel truly immersed in the forested environment.

Day 9 to 9 – Rincón de la Vieja

Today you will set off for Rincón de la Vieja, travelling through the town of Liberia located in the province of Guanacaste. Rincón de la Vieja is one of the six active volcanoes in Costa Rica, standing tall at 1916 metres above sea level. There are numerous fumaroles and hot springs on the slopes of the volcanoes making this a very unique place with substantial geothermal energy. Once you have checked in to your hotel, the remainder of the day is at your leisure.

Day 10 to 10 – Rincón de la Vieja National Park

A hearty breakfast will be good preparation for a day of hikes through the Rincon de la Vieja National Park. You will hike through wet forest, crossing mountain rivers and taking in some spectacular scenery. The hike will end at the Blue Lake, nourished by a spectacular turquoise blue waterfall that invites you for a refreshing swim. End your day at the park watching bubbling mud pools, pits of boiling hot water, vapor geysers and fumaroles.

Please note: Rincón de la Vieja National Park is closed on Mondays.

Day 11 to 11 – Manuel Antonio

Today is a long travel day as you depart for the beautiful Central Pacific and transfer directly to the pristine Manuel Antonio. Set high above the National Park, Manuel Antonio town offers stunning views over the bay and ready access to stunning beaches. After checking in to your hotel, the remainder of the day will be at your leisure.

Day 12 to 12 – Manuel Antonio

Today is free for you to choose your own activities in Manuel Antonio. With shimmering blue water to swim, surf or just relax by on the white sandy beaches. Alternatively, why not visit the incredible National Park? Although it is the country’s smallest national park, the beauty and diversity of wildlife in its 683 hectares is unequaled. The forest of the park is home to sloths, iguanas, rare squirrel monkeys and millions of colourful little crabs. The trail that winds around Punta Catedral affords some spectacular views.

Day 13 to 13 – San José

Today you will say goodbye to the beach paradise of Manuel Antonio and will be transferred back to San Jose. Once you have checked in to your hotel, the remainder of the day is free at your leisure to enjoy the remainder of your time in Costa Rica.

Day 14 to 14 – Depart San José

Your adventure of a lifetime comes to an end today. If you have a late flight or have lengthened your stay by adding post tour accommodation you will have more time to explore the sights.

Today you will be collected from your hotel and transferred to the airport to board your onwards flight.
